Welcome to the home of the Manawatu Badminton Association. We hope you will find all the necessary information regarding badminton in the Manawatu here!
Badminton is a fun and exciting sport and is enjoyed by millions around the world from beginners to Olympic players! Badminton is the fastest racquet sport in the world with the fastest smash ever recorded being timed at 421 kmh (262 mph) by Malaysian player Tan Boon Heong at the 2009 Japan Open. It is a sport that is good for fitness, agility and hand-eye co-ordination. Badminton New Zealand is the national governing body for badminton in NZ.
We are passionate about our sport and want to give everyone the opportunity to take-part! Here in the Manawatu we have a thriving and enthusiastic badminton community that caters for all abilities, ages and ethnicities. Our season typically starts in March and finishes in December, however you can play all-year round and many of us do!
We have junior clubs located in Palmerston North and every year we host the largest participation badminton tournament in Australasia – the Badminton New Zealand North Island Age Group Championships. We also run junior training squads, school holiday programmes and run schools badminton competitions annually.
At senior level our clubs cater for both recreational and competitive players. We run our Super League competition which goes all year around and is a mixture of business house teams, social teams, family/friend teams and also some of our top competitive players.
A growing trend internationally and one which is evident here in the Manawatu is the growth of Masters Badminton, we have a growing number of players 40 and 50 years or older who play regularly at our local clubs and this has enabled us to field a number of representative masters and veterans teams.
So if you are interested in giving badminton a try or are returning to the sport we would love to hear from you.
Kia ora koutou – Thank you all!
