AFS - Host a Student

Letter from Bruce Goodbehere - a long serving Monrad Badminton Club Member and MBA member.

AFS is a not-for-profit, volunteer based organisation with the vision of creating a more just and peaceful world through intercultural understanding.

We achieve this by sending NZ students abroad to live and learn a foreign culture, and language in many instances, and by receiving many students from overseas and finding families for them in our community so that they may live and learn our culture and language.

Below is the profile of a young lady from The Faroe Islands who is coming to New Zealand in July that as yet has no host family.

You may well have already noticed that she is a competitive badminton player and for that reason I thought it might be possible to circulate this profile amongst the Manawatu Badminton community to see if there was a family out there who would like to host Susanna during her stay in NZ.

It should be pointed out that there is no payment for hosting but the rewards received are great. Leonne and I have hosted five times and now have a greatly extended family. We are of course still in contact with our newest kids and look forward to being able to visit them in their own countries in the years to come.

We at AFS Manawatu are always on the lookout for families to host our new intakes of students (all school based) and would appreciate it greatly if Badminton Manawatu could assist by circulating this.

We are also always keen to meet young New Zealanders (school students) who would love to go on an AFS

SusannaSusanna

Susanna lives with her parents and two brothers in a small village in the Faroe Islands (a group of 18 small islands in the North Atlantic Ocean). Susanna’s major interests are sports and music. She plays social handball, competitive badminton and practices rowing. Rowing is the Faroese national sport where there are six rowers and a skipper in a wooden traditional boat. She has been playing the piano for 10 years. Susanna is a creative and calm person and is looking forward to sharing her culture with a kiwi family. (1 year, July 2010-2011)
