Josh Curry first picked up a badminton racquet seven or eight years ago when he tagged along with his older brother Sean.
A friend had invited Sean to the Palmerston North Badminton Club and Josh went too.
But it is the younger Curry who is competing in the Oceania Championships in Invercargill later this month.
Josh, 17, will contend the junior and open titles against New Zealanders, Australians, and possibly players from other Pacific nations.
Depending on the draw, Curry hopes to make the quarter-finals of the juniors, while the senior competition is about playing for experience.
Before heading south, Curry has a training camp in Hastings for the U19 New Zealand team, which will take on Australia for the CP Maddern Trophy in July.
Manawatu's best U19 player, Curry is ranked 11th in the same age group for New Zealand.
