Manawatu Closed Champs Results Singles Night Thursday September 9

Congratulations to all the players who slogged it out at the Manawatu Closed Champs, it was a very entertaining competition and all the players displayed great sportsmanship.

Last night was singles night, and there were many close battles going on in all grades.

There were some great results for many of our senior players who managed to roll back the years and fight off a few young pups for a fleeting moment, he he….

None more so than Alf Meads (70 yrs +) who won the Mens’s Social Grade and who faced down Eric Altemann in the final.

In the Women’s Social Grade our President Janice Cudby used all her experience to win the title. Not bad considering she hasn’t played singles for 7 or so years. All those hours on the exercycle must be paying off!

In the Open Grade Men’s plate final Michael Yee outlasted Callum Smith after a hard fought 3 games that featured many long rallies.

Rose Wapp was the winner of the Women’s Open Singles with Lisa Miller runner up.

Sang Ho Kim won the U15 Boys title with Ehsan Tehseen runner up.

Jonathan Tan won the U15 Boys plate with a win over U13 player Junius Ong.

Kristen Taylor won the U15 Girls title with Rebecca Yee (another U13) coming runner up.

The winner of the Men’s Open Singles for the second year running was Josh Curry who played Fraser Ballantyne a newcomer to PN who represented Scotland in badminton. Apparently Fraser has not played competitive badminton for a few years but he still managed to upset a few of our top players and looks all class!

So congratulations once again to all the players and a big thanks to all those who helped set up the nets and pack down.

A big mention must be made to Mike Newton who did all the number crunching and set up everything in tournament planner. It all ran relatively smoothly thanks to his hard work.

Manawatu Closed Champs Results Doubles Night Thursday September 16

Once again some real tussles taking place in all grades.

In the men’s and women’s open grades however the top seeds took out the titles.

Josh Curry our top junior and his partner Masters/Vets rep Shane Ogier managed to beat the second seeds Mike Newton & Danny Chia from the Div 5 team in two close games. 21 – 16 and 21 – 18 to win the Open Men’s Doubles.

In the Women’s Open Doubles final Rose Wapp (Div 5) and Ruawai Te Rata (u17s) beat Lisa Miller (Div 5) and Kavithya Senthilnathan (u17s)  21-19, 21-16.

Brothers Chris & Ben McEwen upset the top seeds Joseph Wilson & Thomas Lavender in the Open Men’s Plate, they then beat the 2nd seeds, James Conroy and Ryan Marsden from Monrad in a close 3 game final, 22-20, 16-21,21-18.

In the Social grade the father & son combination of Vincent and Junius Ong won the round robin.

The Women’s Social grade was won by Norma Crawford-Meades and Bridget Johnson.

Matt Wapp & Sang-Ho Kim beat Callum Hill & Jonathan Tan in the U15 Boys final and Ehsan Tehseen & Ahmed Ugool won the U15 Boys Plate.

Jessica Rich & Danielle Skarott won the U15 Girls round robin.

Congratulations to all the players, a lot of fun was had by all.

Thanks once again to Mike Newton and everyone else who helped on the night!

Manawatu Closed Champs Results Mixed Doubles Night Thursday September 23

The last night of the Manawatu Closed Champs finished last night thursday Sept 23, with the mixed doubles competition.

There were many competitive pairings, and the skill level was high, even in the social grade.

The Open Grade Mixed Doubles final was an all Palmy Club affair.

Mike Newton & Rose Wapp faced off against Josh Curry and Ruawai Te Rata in a high quality display of badminton.

Josh & Ru winning the match in two games 21 – 11, 21 – 13, a scoreline which didn’t really reflect the great fight put up by Mike and Rose, and the amazing shots and rallies they produced.

Josh Curry became a triple crown winner, winning the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and the Mixed doubles title. However by winning the mixed doubles he denied Rose her chance of a triple crown. I am sure she is happy though to have the Singles and Women’s Doubles titles in her name.

The Open Plate Final was won by Chris Mcewen and Jo Devonshire. This pair only decided to enter after playing together in the last match of the night at Monrad on Monday  night. Jo has returned to playing badminton after a few years off with a shoulder injury. She showed all her experience and combined well with Chris and displayed a lot of grit to soldier on after hurting her back in the final against the talented Filipino pairing of Joel Que and Cherri Yarwood.

The social grade final was won by Khong Voon & Zin Zee Lan, they played Ben Mcewen and Letalaina Manusauloa.

The U15 final featured the top two seeds, Ehsan Tehseen and Kristen Taylor ending up the winners over Matt Wapp and Danielle Skarott.

The U15 plate was won by Amy Rogers & Chris Varghese over their U13 team mates Cameron Loughran & Charlotte Stock.

Thank you to all the players for supporting the competition, there was a much bigger turnout than last year and hopefully it will continue to grow in the years to come, in particular thanks to all the clubs for promoting the event with their members. It was great to see more Massey players involved this year.

Once again a big thank you to Mike Newton for his organisational skills and assistance.
