The Big Catch Up

Hey folks.

I have been so busy working on the North Islands Junior Champs that i have not been able to update this page for weeks.

HERE'S A CATCH UP!!!!!

NORTH ISLAND U17 & U15 CHAMPS JULY 4TH TO JULY 9TH

In the teams event.

Manawatu U15’s placed 5th in Division 2.

Manawatu U17’s placed 4th in Division 2

Some players really improved as the teams competition went on. Some were missing in action at times.

For most of the 15’s it was their first time at North Islands and they would have learned a lot from the experience.

In the North Island U17/U15 Individual Championships, performances of note were:

U15s

Sang Ho Kim & Matthew Wapp made the quarter finals of the Boys Doubles Plate

Cean Demecillo & Dinithi Bowatte made the semi finals of the Girls Doubles Plate

Geena Morgan made the Finals of the Consolation Singles Plate after beating fellow team member Kristen Taylor, but going down in 3 sets in the final. Interestingly Geena was not included in the U15s team event. On the strength of her performances over the individuals she may well have played her way in.

The lucky prize goes to Matt Wapp for winning the Wi game console as a spot prize during the prizegiving. Yay!!!!

U17s

Ruawai Te Rata made the quarter finals of the girl’s singles & mixed doubles in the championship draw.

Thomas Lavender made the semi-finals of the boy’s singles plate (His first round match in the main draw against Shao Yu Tang from the Auckland 1 team was a high quality match going to 3 games and neck to neck the whole way.)

Joseph Wilson made the semi-finals of the boy’s singles classic plate

Xinyuan Yao made the quarter-finals of the boys consolation plate

Nicole Christianson made the semi-finals of the girl’s consolation plate.

Kavithia Senithilnathan made the quarter-finals of the girls singles plate, the mixed doubles plate and girls doubles plate along with fellow Manawatu player Rebecca Rose

I would like to congratulate the new players in our Under 17 team, Scott Anderson, Nicole Christianson & Rebecca Rose who continue to progress at an outstanding rate. Their determination and never say die attitude is a credit to them, their coach and to Manawatu as a whole.

AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR INTERNATIONAL & CP MADDEN

Manawatu’s top junior Josh Curry contested the Australian Junior International for U19s in Launceston Tasmania from July 3 to July 6th.

He made it through to the 4th round of the men’s singles which is no easy task considering the quality of the field.

In the men’s doubles he was partnered with Angus Crawford of Hawkes Bay, they missed out on the semi-finals by a whisker going down, 21-19, 23-25, 24 – 22 in the quarter finals, whew!

Josh also represented the Central Regions team at the CP Madden U19 Tournament in Launceston Tasmania from the 7th to the 10th of July. The Central Region team finished 7th overall.

UMPIRES ASSESMENTS ON FINALS DAY AT THE NORTH ISLANDS

On the last day of the North Islands, those of us who attended the level 1 umpiring course had to umpire games and act as service judges. This was a nerve wracking exercise but more so for our youngsters Ruawai Te Rata & Matt Wapp.

Others who were being assessed were Janice Cudby, Greg Busch, Mike Smith, Mike Newton, Richard Skarrot and yours truly.

Here's hoping we all have passed!

MANAWATU MASTERS 2 - Div 4 AT LEVIN ON JUNE 12

Lost 1 -11 to Horowhenua-Kapiti.
Lost 4 – 8 to Taranaki

Horowhenua – Kapiti was always shaping up to be a tough tie but we were disappointed not to get closer to Taranaki who we thought we might have had a chance of beating.

We were without Bevan Smith for this tie but Bill Ward slotted in very well and will remain with the team for the next two ties as we won’t have Duncan for further ties.

THE NORTH ISLAND U19 AND WELLINGTON AMI U19 JUNIOR OPEN - May 21 - 23

Josh Curry made it to the semi-finals in the men’s singles where he lost to last years New Zealand U17 Champion Asher Richardson in two games.
